Marty Thomas Photography

Hi, I'm Marty!

My love for photography started when my parents bought me a polaroid camera when I was about seven years old. The ability I had to capture those meaningful moments in time is so special. The world can pass by so quickly if you are not careful, but photography makes me take a step back and enjoy the majesty of God's creation. Photography has allowed me to not miss the small things in life like the flight of the hummingbird. Although I am not a morning person, seeing the breathtaking nature of a sunrise through my lens makes the early rise well worth it.

I love how photography demands both patience and spontaneity. It teaches me to slow down, to notice the subtle shifts in light or the expression on someone’s face just before they smile. I hope viewing my photos brings you the same level of joy that I receive in taking them.

My Photo Gallery

A small sample of my favorite photos

Sunrise/Sunsets

Hilton Head SC

This is a sunset picture at the Disney Resort at Hilton Head SC. This photo gave me the opportunity to practice taking High Dynamic Range (HDR) panoramas.

Grand Floridan Resort

Seeing the sunrise is a great way to start the day. Seeing the boat flowing across the river in the early morning light was very soothing.

Fort Walton FL

This was one of the first sunrises I took. I was amazed how the sky gradually transitioned from dark into vivid orange and yellow colors during the "golden hour" time.

What Photography Means To Me

Photography changed my life

Photography helps me look at the world in a different way. Because of photography, I have a greater awareness of the shapes and patterns that surround us, and I want to photograph them! I am on the lookout out for leading lines, or naturally occurring frames in the landscape that make for good composition. I often pull out my phone to take a quick snapshot. I frequently do a lot of prior research before going on trips to map out the best location and time of day to stand for taking photos with my Nikon z6ii.

I truly believe that photography helps me enjoy my surroundings more. I have a new appreciation for the beauty of the earth, and I love sharing that beauty with others through my photos. More than just an artistic outlet, photography has become a way for me to be present, mindful, and more deeply connected to the world around me.

My favorite Photo

I have a difficult time choosing my favorite photo. It is a similar task to choosing my favorite song, or favorite food. It's not easy.

I find that the photo that might be my favorite today will change by next month, and that is because I tend to get attached to the most recent photos I have taken. My favorite photo at the moment is of "Alice", a hummingbird that frequently visits the feeder on our front porch. Seeing her at the feeder is certainly a delight, and the photo serves as a reminder of what amazing creatures hummingbirds are.

My Camera

I love my camera deeply—not just as a tool, but as a constant companion in my journey through life.

It's been with me across continents, capturing moments both grand and intimate, giving me the power to freeze time and tell stories through light and perspective. From quiet alleys in old towns to sweeping mountain vistas, it has helped me see the world more clearly and express the way I feel about it.
